Easy Watercolored Galaxy Background with Distress Inks (VIDEO)

31 May

Good morning!  I have a card today featuring the WPlus9 Little Dreamers set and a quick and easy watercolored galaxy background with distress inks!

You're a Superstar by Jessica Frost-BallasI also created a video showing the process of watercoloring the galaxy background!  You can watch the video below or at my Youtube channel!

To start I colored the star and bunny with copic markers and die-cut them with the coordinating dies.  Then I did a wash of clean water across my watercolor paper before adding a light wash of black soot distress ink.  I dropped in blotches of black soot distress ink and then blotted it lightly.  I repeated the process but the second time I allowed the distress ink to dry on its own.  Next I smooshed dried mustard, seedless preserves, salty ocean, and chipped sapphire distress ink onto my craft mat and added (literally) blotches of color to the background.  I blotted them off and then added a final layer of black soot distress ink.  At this point it was looking like a mess and I almost gave up on it.  But I decided to add a few more layers before making a final judgement.

You're a Superstar by Jessica Frost-BallasI flicked it with black soot distress ink, white acrylic paint, and metallic gold paint and let the droplets dry.  Meanwhile I stamped the sentiment from Little Dreamers onto black cardstock and heat-embossed it with silver embossing powder before trimming it down to a fishtail banner.  Once the galaxy background was totally dry I prepped it with a powder tool, stamped the stars from Stardust across the background, and heat-embossed them with white embossing powder.  I allowed some of them to peek above and below the panel to add to the loose feel of the background.  I adhered the bunny, star, and sentiment to the card with foam mounting tape, applied spectrum noir clear sparkle to the star and the bunny’s cheeks, and finished the card with a few stars and sequins from Lucy’s Little Things Mermaid mix and Pretty Pink Posh’s sparkling clear mix!

I have no idea what’s come over me but suddenly making videos isn’t quite as intimidating anymore.  I still have the issue where I change my mind halfway through making a card and have to do some creative editing/cutting after I end up in a totally different direction than I originally intended but, they’re getting a little less scary and a little more enjoyable!  Baby steps! 😉 I know you’re all sad that you don’t have to watch me throw my hands up in the air and fling things around my craft table as I change my mind over and over!  Ha!  Anyway I’d like to know from you guys…what kind of videos would you like to see from me?  And thanks to those of you who’ve been leaving such sweet comments on my videos!  I greatly appreciate them and all of you SO much! 🙂 Have a wonderful day!

Just enjoy watching you create, although it would be fun to watch all the “mistake” drama…it’s good to know you’re not the only nutcase who throws stuff around. Anyway, love this card, it’s so sweet. And thanks for the tutorial on galaxies. Someday, perhaps I’ll get brave and do one (not that I’ll show it to anyone).

Wow, I have been thinking about trying the galaxy skies I have seen but yours just blew me away. I can not watercolor but I am going to practice your technique till I get it right. Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring with us.

What an adorably sweet card Jess! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who makes mistakes while inking or watercoloring but you managed to save the card nicely!
