Landscape beginnings…(now with photos!)

3 Nov

Well our house isn’t unpacked yet but we’ve made some progress on landscaping!  Baby steps, I know.

Pictures will have to come tomorrow (stupid getting dark early thing…) but so far we’ve got a weeping cherry tree “snow fountain” and a crepe myrtle “tuscarora” (thanks to house-warming gift certificates from my Bridgewater harp students and my church congregation!), a Japanese red maple (thanks to my in-laws), and the three trees I started last spring: two lilac trees and a wisteria.  The climbing rose didn’t make it.  I’ll try that one again next year…after I take care of the poison ivy currently hanging out on the front hickory tree.

Finally, we’ve got a little rectangular space between the driveway and the front steps.  Steve ripped out the grass that was living there and we picked up some garden soil to get that bed started.  My plan is to plant a mess of tulip bulbs there for the spring and put in some pansies for the winter.  I also want to plant some bulbs (crocus, daffodil, and hyacinth) around the 2 large trees in the front yard and 1 large tree in the back.  I love the naturalized look of bulbs blooming in the grass in the spring.  We’ll see if the squirrels leave them alone…I might have to up the peanuts I throw out as a bribe.

Anyway, yeah, I’ll add some photos tomorrow but tonight you’ll just have to use your imagination!

And here are the promised photos (of course most of them are brown sticks at the moment…but it’ll give a good basis for comparison in the spring!):
