Hero Arts My Monthly Hero Countdown, Day 1

2 Jul

Good morning!  We’re kicking off the countdown to the Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero kit today and I’m sharing a fun technique using the gorgeous new kit!

Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit by Jessica Frost-Ballas for Hero Arts

I have long admired the crafty creations of my friend Claudia and her silhouette cards are absolutely stunning!  She posted a video on how she created one a few weeks ago and it inspired me to use the technique on my card!  I started by masking a moon die cut using the Infinity Nesting circle dies and blended a night sky background using reactive inks in Fruit Punch, Taffy, Grape Slush, and distress oxide inks in Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot.  I love that you can combine the two inks for even more color combinations!  I removed the mask and used Antique Linen distress oxide ink to add a little color to my moon.  Then I splattered the panel with water and shimmer spray and blotted off the excess.

Once the panel was dry I stamped the sentiment onto the moon with versafine and heat-embossed it with clear embossing powder.  Next I stamped the kit images with intens-ified black ink across my panel.  I let the stamps overlap as necessary for the design.  Then I simply painted over each stamped image with black gouache.  It’s not perfect coverage but I think that lends to the charm a bit and gives you a totally different way to use your stamps!  I also painted the ground with gouache and then let it dry completely.  Once it was dry I added accents with a white gel pen to finish the card!

And that’s it for me!  Head over to the Hero Arts blog for more inspiration using the July My Monthly Hero kit all weekend long!!  And then I’ll be back Tuesday with the full kit reveal!!

For a chance to win a kit before you can buy it, just leave a comment on this (and every) Countdown to Creativity post. We’ll randomly draw one lucky winner from all the comments left across all countdown posts. The winner will be announced first thing Monday morning, July 5th, before the kit launches at 10am Pacific. The more you comment, the more chances to win!

Thanks so much for visiting and enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Hello from Malta, New York. Your card was beautiful. Your explanation was amazing. I have some of the inks you used. I will need to try this once I get me some black gouache.

Now, I’m confused as thought the theme was gnomes and now I see your card is whimsical and has a fairy. Interesting and anxious to see how these fit together. Love your night sky.

Jessica, I really like the bold solid black images against the lovely colours in the background. The sentiment is so cute with that teeny fairy.
